Deadline Day: Coates and Alvarez join Sunderland

Published:

Sunderland have suffered plenty of frustration this deadline day but  have made a breakthrough with Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates heading to the Stadium of Light.

Gus Poyet looks to have missed out on deals to sign forward Fabio Borini and defender Micah Richards, with the pair heading to QPR and Fiorentina respectively, but the Uruguayan defender will join the club from Liverpool on a season-long loan deal.

The 23-year-old has made just six Premier League appearances for the Reds and Brendan Rodgers is hoping the centre back can gain vital top flight experience with the Black Cats.

In a deal that will suit both parties, Sunderland will hope Coates can help steer them away from the relegation zone and towards the top 10 of the Premier League, something available at odds of 11/4.

The Mackems have also look tied up a loan deal for former Arsenal target Ricky Alvarez with a view to a permanent deal.

The Argentine international held talks with the club over a move to the Premier League and had a medical yesterday and Sunderland have now confirmed the deal.

With one domestic loan deal still available the club will keep tabs on further attacking reinforcements with Danny Welbeck still  linked with a return to the club.
