Deadline Day: Arsenal reignite interest in Dortmund’s Reus

Arsenal are set to test Borussia Dortmund’s resolve with a £40m bid for Germany international Marco Reus.

The Gunners’ search for a striker has been well documented following Olivier Giroud’s injury and after missing out on a deal to bring Radamel Falcao to the Emirates Stadium, Arsene Wenger is ready to revive his interest in the 25-year-old.

The French manager insists he will only splash the cash before the transfer deadline closes if he finds a player of the right quality and Reus, who has featured 21 times for Germany scoring seven goals, certainly fits that bill.

The north London club were reportedly in talks with Reus earlier in the summer before injury ended his World Cup dream and with a clause in his contract – BVB face losing the former Borussia Mönchengladbach star for just £25m next summer – Arsenal are ready to tempt the German side into a deal.

And with reports in Germany suggesting Jurgen Klopp has signed former player Shinji Kagawa from Manchester United as a direct replacement for Reus, who can play as a central striker or a wide man, Dortmund could be ready to cash in on one of their prized assets.

With the transfer window closing at 11pm it remains to be seen whether Arsenal officials can wrap up a deal for Reus but if they can, it would certainly appease the fans who called for a striker signing after the club’s 1-1 draw in the Premier League with Leicester on Sunday.

Any Reus deal may even see the north London club, who are 12/1 to win the title, cut to win a first Premier League crown since 2004.

Wenger’s men have also been linked with moves for Wilfried Bony, Jermain Defoe and Danny Welbeck, while it remains to be seen whether there are any new defensive arrivals before the transfer deadline with  Matija Nastasić, Winston Reid and Ron Vlaar all linked with a move to the Emirates.
