Crystal Palace game still make or break for Newcastle boss
A late Papiss Cisse double may have saved Alan Pardew from the chop over the weekend but it could prove to be merely a stay of execution for the Newcastle United boss if his team bow out of the Capital One Cup with an embarrassing defeat against Crystal Palace.
The Magpies boast a good record at Selhurst Park, having won on each of their previous five trips to the South London ground and are 15/8 to win in 90 minutes this Wednesday with Ladbrokes.
However, with Palace fresh from winning 3-2 at Everton and having already picked up a valuable point with a 3-3 draw when they met Newcastle at St James’ Park earlier this season, a home win is certainly not out of the question with the hosts on at 11/8 to triumph.
And despite the fighting talk of Pardew following last weekend’s 2-2 draw with Hull, the pressure on the Newcastle manager remains intense.
“It’s not lost on me that I get accused of being arrogant but I’m also a proud man to be manager of this football club and I’m going to fight to keep it,” he told reporters at the weekend.
But despite the result against Hull, Pardew remains under pressure, with Ladbrokes still pricing the Toon boss as the favourite to be the next Premier League manager to leave his post.
The Magpies chief remains in pole position following a weekend in which fellow strugglers like West Brom and Palace picked up their first wins of the season.
Alan Irvine was certainly a contender for the chop prior to picking up three points against Spurs but with only Pardew and Burnley boss Sean Dyche yet to claim a win this term, any heavy loss here could yet prove fatal.
Crystal Palace can be backed at 18/5 to win with both teams finding the net this Wednesday, while Pardew is 4/11 to be the next top-flight boss to go and either one looks a tempting prospect.
