Calamitous Fulham’s relegation odds far too good to be true

Published:

According to Ladbrokes, six teams in the Championship have more chance of being relegated this season than Fulham. All of them have more points than the win-and-manger less Cottagers.

The west London club are 7/2 chances to suffer consecutive relegations with the bookie. They are four points short of safety after suffering their seventh loss in eight league games, and first since Shahid Khan gave Felix Magath the chop.

A 1-0 defeat to Blackburn last time out was nothing new this term, although the performance was improved according to caretaker manager Kit Symons.

Nonetheless, the price on Fulham falling out of England’s second tier cannot be ignored.

The side, which has chopped and changed like a awards show host over the summer, has scored just one goal at home this season, while managing to score four more than that on the road but shipped 15 at the other end.

Senior players are in scant supply at Craven Cottage, there were six players over the age of 23 in the recent Blackburn loss with only two to call on from the bench.

The adage that with youth comes fearlessness is true in isolation, but as a large group that bravery becomes trepidation.

Symons has at least tried to step the tide. He recalled the bewilderingly overlooked Bryan Ruiz for the battle with Rovers and is keen to be given the chance to stop the rot on a full-time basis.

Whether Khan gives him that chance though is a riddle most would be brave to try and solve. Magath was the longest serving (and third) manager in the American billionaire’s tenure at just 217 days.

Having ignored the Fulham alumnus in appointing Martin Jol, Rene Meulensteen and then Magath, it seems Symons is unlikely to be given a chance now considering how grave the danger of falling to League One is.
