Tottenham fans could soon be given a boost after learning that defender Jan Vertonghen is on the brink of signing a new deal to stay at White Hart Lane.
The Belgian ace was linked with a number of clubs over the summer, with many anticipating a bid from Manchester United, but new manager Maurico Pochettino managed to hang on to his player and looks set to reward that loyalty with a new deal.
While there are still four years remaining on his current contract, the player is in line for a bumper pay rise in the hope to ward of attention from potential suitors in January.
Vertonghen’s agent recently revealed that while his client has Champions League aspirations he is hoping to fulfil them while remaining with the north London club.
“He is happy at Tottenham and wants to play for the club. He wants to play Champions League with Tottenham and he has a very good feeling about the new manager,” he said.
“Last year they made many changes and brought in many new players and it was not so good, but this season it is possible for Tottenham to qualify for the Champions League.”
