Bad news Chelsea! Manchester City move to extend Lampard loan

Published:

Chelsea may not have seen the last of Frank Lampard in Manchester City colours with the Premier League champions reportedly set to extend his loan deal at the club.

The 36-year-old had been set to link-up with new club New York City in January as he begins a brand new chapter of his playing career in Major League Soccer.

However, the Manchester Evening News has now claimed that the Citizens are now extending the temporary arrangement as Manuel Pellegrini goes in search of major honours both domestically and in Europe.

The Sky Blues are already set to be without Yaya Toure at the start of the New Year, with the midfielder set to compete at the African Cup of Nations with the Ivory Coast.

Toure’s temporary departure leaves the club short of central midfield options, with the burden of responsibility placed on the shoulders of Brazilian duo Fernando and Fernandinho.

That is now set to change, with City extending Lampard’s loan in a move that could see the 36-year-old line-up against former club Chelsea once again, after his loan was extended until February.

The Citizens are set to visit Stamford Bridge in the last weekend of January in what is sure to be a tasty Premier League encounter between the two teams most likely to be battling for the title.

Lampard’s presence, coupled with his notable goal threat, will add extra spice to any encounter with Jose Mourinho and co and he could yet prove to be the difference for City in the title race.

The former England international silenced several of the doubters last time out with a well-taken goal in what would have no doubt been an emotionally-charged appearance for Lampard, who played 648 games for Chelsea during a 13-year stay at the club.

Still the Pensioners’ all-time top scorer with 211 goals, Lampard could feature for City when they visit the KC Stadium with the away side on at 4/7 to pick up all three points.
