Arsenal offered Defoe as striker search continues in north London

The race to bring Jermain Defoe back to the Premier League has taken another interesting twist after reports emerged about Arsenal being offered the former Tottenham striker’s services.

As reported by Ladbrokes News, QPR and Newcastle are thought to be battling it out for the former England star’s services but Arsene Wenger has been sounded out about his availability.

Arsenal fans are desperate for Wenger to dip into his transfer kitty and bring in a new striker after the 1-1 draw with Leicester but Defoe was not the name they had in mind.

With Olivier Giroud out injured the Gunners were reportedly interested in bringing in Radamel Falcao but Manchester United beat them to his signature after completing a loan deal for the Colombian hitman.

Swansea striker Wilfried Bony and Sevilla frontman Carlos Bacca are other names linked to a move to north London but Defoe, who is set to leave the MLS after just five months, is the latest in a long list of names offered to Arsenal.

Wenger, whose side are now 12/1 for Premier League glory, has been an admirer of the former Spurs man in the past but at 31 the Toronto striker would represent only a short-term option.

As previously mentioned QPR and Newcastle are at the front of the queue and look the likelier destinations for a man who has scored 19 goals in 55 appearances for England.

It appears the Gunners will pass on a deal for Defoe but with moves for the likes of Kim Kallstrom fresh in the memory, stranger things have happened with Wenger and Arsenal on deadline day.
