Watford good value for promotion as Deeney signs

Published:

The weekend’s 4-1 win for Watford over Leeds has highlighted the difference between the two clubs this season.

Watford are now in the ascendancy after the thrashing and Hornets fans will be even more confident of success this year after learning of striker Troy Deeney’s decision to stay at Vicarage Road.

Deeney, who scored the second of Watford’s four goals against United, has been chased by a number of club’s throughout the summer but now looks set to pen a new four-year deal to remain with the London club.

The result, coupled with news of Deeney’s new deal, has seen Watford cut to 23/10 to secure promotion to the Premier League.

Deeney has scored 63 goals in 181 appearances for the Hornets and will now play a key role in the Vicarage Road outfit’s pursuit of top flight football.

Watford’s opponents last weekend, however, are staring at the opposite end of the table after a calamitous start to the campaign.

The Elland Road outfit were expected to struggle this year after appointing the inexperienced David Hockaday but even Leeds fans have been taken aback by the side’s poor start.

A 1-0 home win against Middlesbrough is the only positive so far, with Leeds losing all three of their other league matches.

Owner Massimo Cellino appeared to sack Hockaday on the back of the weekend’s heavy defeat only to change his mind and keep faith with the former Forest Green Rovers boss.

Leeds are 13/10 to get back on track with a win against Bolton this weekend, with the Trotters priced at 2/1 to heap further misery on the West Yorkshire side.

The draw can be backed at 12/5 and would provide some relief at least for Hockaday but another loss will surely see the 3/1 on them falling into League One shorten even further!
