Van Gaal’s words a smokescreen for marquee Man Utd signings?

Published:

One World Cup and a few pre-season games later and most footy fans probably feel like they have new Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal fully sussed.

In the wake of claiming his first piece of silverware as United’s new shot-caller, albeit in a pre-season tournament, the Dutchman appeared to be giving the biggest hint yet that the club would not, after all, be signing any galacticos.

“Manchester United shall buy players when we can improve our selection,” the United manager said. “And that is a lot more difficult than you think.” “I won’t come with the axe – it’s not like that,” Van Gaal said.

However, Van Gaal could so easily be pulling the wool over all of his main rival’s eyes.

Leading the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal into believing United have given up on adding the likes of Arturo Vidal before the window closes has obvious appeal.

Lulling them into a false sense of security before timing a massive announcement would give the 5/1 title shots a huge boost as the season gets underway.

Rumours continue to do the rounds that Vidal is ready to join the Van Gaal revolution, while Colombian World Cup star Juan Cuadrado is the latest stellar name in the frame.

Both of these players fit the profile of ‘improving the selection’ available to the Dutchman at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, it’s certainly no skin off Van Gaal’s nose to say he is working to get the best out of the current squad, especially as results during their pre-season tour of America fully back these statements up.

Peripheral figures of last season such as Ashley Young have already flourished early doors under the new boss.
