Toronto win make Tsonga tempting US Open pick

Punters looking to back form over reputation could be tempted to pick Jo Wilfried-Tsonga and Agnieszka Radwańska for US Open victory in light of their impressive wins in Toronto.
Tsonga has threatened to join the top table of the men’s game in the past only to fade away slightly but the manner of his victory in Canada makes a mockery of his pricing of 28/1 to claim the honours at Flushing Meadows.
The 29-year-old became the first Frenchman to land the Rogers Cup title and while that success may not be seen as a precursor to a major triumph the calibre of opponents that Tsonga swatted aside simply cannot be ignored.
Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Britain’s Andy Murray are all ahead of the Frenchman in the betting for the US Open but neither one of these men were able to stop Tsonga’s march to the title.
Djokovic, world number one and current US Open favourite at 5/4, was comprehensively beaten in the Round of 16 in Toronto, with Tsonga breezing to a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
The matches with Federer and Murray were harder fought but the former still went in straight sets and the competitive nature of the games will only stand Tsonga in better stead when he comes up against the big names in the Big Apple.
Having never ventured past the quarter-final stage in New York, Tsonga remains an underdog but at 28/1 an each-way bet looks too good to ignore.
Likewise, Radwańska, who can be backed at 20/1 to claim the ladies title in NYC following her Toronto success.
The Pole may not have faced quite the level of opponent as Tsonga but seeing off Venus Williams 6-4, 6-2 in the final, having already beaten Victoria Azarenka – US Open finalist for the last two years – and Sabine Lisicki is no mean feat.
The 25-year-old has also failed to shine at the US Open in the past – never getting past the fourth round in seven attempts – but if she can carry her form in to the next major a final appearance – or more – could well be on the cards.
