Swansea set to land one of the signings of the summer

It is fair to say that few people knew what to expect from Swansea City this season, with Garry Monk’s side barely mentioned in the build-up to their opening day match against Manchester United.

That was partly down to the obsession surrounding the Swans’ opponents and their new manager that day, but by the end of the game it seemed clear that the Welsh side are well set for a fine campaign.

Swansea’s 2-1 win came courtesy of a goal from Gylfi Sigurdsson, one of several fine signings made over the summer.

Lukasz Fabianski has become their number one keeper, while both Bafetimbi Gomis and Jefferson Montero looked bright in sub appearances at Old Trafford.

The best of the bunch might still be to come however, with reports that Napoli defender Federico Fernandez is set to join the Swans for a relatively measly £8m.

Considering that Spurs are struggling to push through a £17m move for Fernandez’s compatriot Mateo Musacchio who, unlike the Napoli man, did not make Argentina’s world cup squad, it looks an absolute steal.

Fernandez was a regular for Rafa Benitez’s Napoli as they finished third in Serie A last season and played five of their six Champions League games as they crashed out despite picking up 12 points in their group.

Add in the facts that Fernandez played four times for the runners-up at the World Cup and is still only 25, and you start to wonder exactly what the catch is, and why a few other sides aren’t desperately trying to gazump the Swans.

Centre-backs have been the subject of some ludicrous fees this summer, with David Luiz’s £50m move to PSG springing to mind in particular, yet the Swans might be about to grab a bargain.

After their impressive start and summer’s business, Swansea’s 5/4 odds to finish in the top ten look like excellent value, and even a 22/1 punt on a top-six berth is tempting.
