Simpson’s Ryder Cup ambitions sway Wyndham C’ship betting
Published:Phil Mickelson’s resurgence at Valhalla ensured the popular lefty automatically secured his place on Tom Watson’s USA Ryder Cup team, meaning the top two in the betting for the Wyndham Championship will be battling to curry favour for the three captain’s pick spots.
Market leader Brandt Snedeker (12/1) and Webb Simpson (16/1) were both members of the US contingent on the wrong side of a thrilling Ryder Cup contest at Medinah in 2012.
Together the pair are dangling outside the automatic places and as such are running out of opportunities to sufficiently impress upon Watson that they are best-placed to help Team USA wrestle back the Ryder Cup.
After an unexpectedly slow start to the season Snedeker makes a worthy favourite having returned to form in recent months, with a ninth at the US Open serving as a springboard for five top 25s in his next six starts.
A winner here back in 2007 en route to becoming PGA Tour Rookie of the Year, you could do worse than backing Sneds for this one.
However, at more attractive odds of 16/1, former US Open champion Simpson gets the nod in front of the Nashville native.
While he’s remained strangely anonymous in the majors this season, Simpson has twice posted top-three’s on the PGA Tour this summer and has not finished outside 22nd on four visits to Sedgefield Country Club.
Defending champion Patrick Reed has no such Ryder Cup worries having sewn up his berth on Watson’s Gleneagles roster already, and given he shot three sub-67 rounds in Greensboro last year, the 20/1 third-favourite also holds plenty of appeal.
An indifferent showing at the last two majors aside, the two-time winner in 2014 has posted 11, 26 and fourth at Bridgestone in Reed’s last three starts on the PGA Tour.
On a European front Italian Francesco Molinari is also a decent shout at delicious odds of 40/1 as he too chases a captain’s pick from Paul McGinley.
