Queens Park Rangers closing in on deals for World Cup duo

Harry Redknapp looks set to give Queens Park Rangers hopes of top-flight survival a shot in the arm, following opening day defeat to Hull, with the signings of Eduardo Vargas and Leroy Fer.

The R’s went down 1-0 to the Tigers at the weekend, with Charlie Austin missing a late penalty that would have salvaged a point for the London club.

Rio Ferdinand also endured a debut to forget, having been singled out for poor marking from the corner that resulted in Hull’s only goal.

But while plenty of positives can be drawn from a QPR display that was solid for the most part, news of two new signings are sure to give everyone around Loftus Road a lift ahead of Sunday’s trip to London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

According to reports, Rangers are closing in on the signing of Chile international Eduardo Vargas, with the South American striker set to move to the Rs on a season-long loan from Napoli.

The 24-year-old, who can also operate as a winger, was previously linked with a move to Arsenal and would be a great addition to Redknapp’s squad, who lacked a cutting edge in front of goal last weekend.

Vargas made global headlines this summer after scoring for Chile against Spain with a goal that helped knock the defending champions out of the World Cup at the group stage.

He could be joined by another World Cup goalscorer in the form of Leroy Fer, with the Holland international closing in on a move to QPR from current club Norwich City.

Fer netted for the Oranje against Chile at the World Cup in a 2-0 victory for the Dutch and could be set to sign for Redknapp’s side in an £8m deal.

The 24-year-old former Feyenoord and Twente midfielder is set to undergo a medical at the London club and could be crucial to helping Rangers avoid the drop, with the club 8/13 to stay up with Ladbrokes.

Those backing the R’s to return to the Championship, however, can get odds of 6/5 with the bookmakers.
