PSG’s David Luiz among top 5 football financial blunders

Published:

Having forked out massive fees on flops such as Andriy Shevchenko and Fernando Torres in the past, it’s probably about time Chelsea were able to milk a transfer for all its worth and that’s exactly what has happened with the sale of David Luiz.

The floppy-haired Brazilian has just been unveiled at Paris St-Germain having cost the French champions a world record £50m for a defender.

Anyone who watched the World Cup will be aware that PSG, 10/1 shots for the Champions League, have had their trousers, pants and socks yanked down over this deal.

They wouldn’t be the first to chuck a fortune down the drain though:

5. Darlington’s Stadium

Built for £18m mainly to house Darlington FC of the Conference, unsurprisingly the 25,000 all-seater was a slight miscalculation which has since seen the club dissolve after financial turmoil.

4. Andy Carroll x2

Whoever sanctioned the £35m fee on behalf of Liverpool is probably no longer in employment while Carroll’s new owners have now publicly stated the £15m they paid for him was a mistake.

3. Liverpool’s Southampton raid

Good players they might be, but Saints must be chuckling all the way to the bank having made approximately £3m on Rickie Lambert, £25m on youth product Adam Lallana and about £11.5m on Dejan Lovren.

2. Marouane Fellaini

Desperation can do funny things to people and in this case it caused David Moyes to take leave of his senses when paying £27.5m for his former player.

1. David Luiz

The Brazilian takes the biscuit though (and the entire tin) as he is essentially a dodgy defender, prone to errors who should really play in midfield.
