US Open: Trust this old-timer on Day Two at Flushing Meadows
Published:While the rain comes down in buckets over England, New York City looks set for more clear skies as tennis’ US Open heads into Day Two at Flushing Meadows.
The bet most likely to land here is the 1/200 on favourite Novak Djokovic seeing off Diego Sebastian Schwartzman, but we can do a whole lot better than that, with the three below set to usher in a treble paying out at over 12/1.
Lleyton Hewitt to beat Tomas Berdych @ 10/3
The 2001 winner has only failed to make it past the first round in New York once in 13 attempts and has enjoyed a fine 2014, beating Ivo Karlovic in the Hall of Fame Championship final in Newport, Rhode Island last month and downing Roger Federer to take the Brisbane International at the start of the season.
Berdych reached the semi-final here two years ago, put has never gone past the fourth round in ten other attempts on what is clearly his least favourite surface.
With that in mind, over 3/1 on the two-time Grand Slam winner prevailing looks big.
Guillermo Garcia-Lopez to beat Yen-Hsun Lu @ 11/8
The Spaniard’s first-round defeat to Juan Martin Del Potro last season was the first US Open in seven that saw Garcia-Lopez bow out at the earliest available opportunity.
He has never made it any further, but nor has world number 34 Lu, whose 2010 Wimbledon quarter-final appearance was the only time the Taiwanese successfully traversed the third round in 35 Grand Slam showings.
Lu has crashed out at this stage in 19 of those appearances, so taking on his super-short 8/15 odds ranks a no-brainer.
Bernard Tomic to beat Dustin Brown @ 3/10
Germany’s Brown hasn’t featured in the first round at Flushing Meadows since beating Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo at this stage in 2010, before Andy Murray put paid to that challenge.
Tomic, who took the 2009 Junior version of this event, hasn’t yet hit such heights in the US Open proper, but the Australian has made the second round in each of the last three years and rates a worthy favourite to make short work of his 29-year-old rival.
