US Open Day One: Kyrgios at start of another Grand Slam adventure
Published:It’s the final chance for the US Open field to try and claim a tennis Grand Slam this season, but for many of the competitors the tournament will be quickly resigned to memory after a first-round loss.
Here are three players we think will suffer such a hardship on the tournament’s opening day:
Nick Kyrgios to beat Mikhail Youzhny – 11/8
Russian Youzhny can’t be accused of inconsistency at this year’s Slams, departing all of the previous three in the second round.
The US Open has been his worst event of the four during his career however and he’s suffered two first-round exits at Flushing Meadow in the last three years.
Still riding high from his Nadal-toppling exploits at Wimbledon, hard-hitting Kyrgios can prevail here.
Andreas Beck to beat Pablo Carreno-Busta – 4/7
The German has already played, and won, three matches to qualify for this opening stage of the US Open, while his opponent has spent much of his recent time on court losing on clay.
While the pair’s respective form makes Beck the clear favourite, his opponent’s record at Grand Slam tournaments only further enhances his chances.
Carreno-Busta has never managed to previously get passed the first round at any Slam in the four attempts he’s had to date.
Sara Errani to beat Kirsten Flipkens – 4/7
Errani’s slight favouritism indicates this could be a tight encounter, but in reality the Italian should be quite comfortable in victory.
A quarter-final at the French Open indicates there is Grand Slam form behind the 27-year-old, while her two wins over Flipkens, both on the hard courts, suggest she has the upper hand over her opponent on this surface too.
