Newcastle and QPR signings among our best of the summer
Published:You may have come across similar “Top 5 transfers of the summer” articles on your travels around the internet, likely listing Chelsea’s heavy-hitting purchases of Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas or Arsenal’s becoming-more-commonplace splurge on Alexis Sanchez in the list.
Far be it for us to judge them, but those lists are dull. Here’s five less obvious signings to catch our eye this off-season:
Sigurdsson to Swansea
Last time Gylf was in south Wales he basically lit it up, scoring seven goals in 18 games during a loan spell from Hoffenheim in 2012.
Now back as a big fish in a little pond permanently following his move from Tottenham, expect the attacking midfielder to help himself to goals aplenty for the Swans as he reminds everyone why a top-four challenger paid money for his services.
Tadic to Southampton
So much has been made of the nuclear evacuation out of St Mary’s that there’s been little time to get excited over Dusan Tadic’s arrival.
The midfielder scored 16 goals and laid on 14 more in the Eredivisie for FC Twente last season and scored that many again in all competitions in the campaign prior. His is a signature that will certainly make the south coast exodus easier to swallow.
Daryl Janmaat to Newcastle
Considering the Dutchman was being chased by Arsenal but ended up under Alan Pardew’s guise says everything as to why his name appears in this run down.
Janmaat only made three starts for Louis van Gaal at the World Cup but was hugely impressive in that time and will fill in for Mathieu Debuchy perfectly.
Steven Caulker to QPR
Like Janmaat, the former Cardiff captain was being chased by some Champions League-calibre clubs this summer, yet has plumped for Loftus Road.
With Rio Ferdinand alongside him, the former Hotspur has potential to develop into an England regular this season.
Bojan Krkic to Stoke
A former Barcelona player who once broke a record held by Lionel Messi (albeit as the youngest Blaugrana in a La Liga game) at Stoke City. Need we say more?
