Newcastle v Manchester City: Over 3.5 goals is the money-maker

Published:

Sunday’s second instalment contains all the juiciness of a slightly over-ripe pear on paper, as free-scoring champions Manchester City visit an unpredictable Newcastle side replete with some attractive summer signings.

Not surprisingly, City are seen as the much more likely victors by Ladbrokes at 4/6, with the draw at 16/5 and the home win a princely-sounding 4/1.

However, bamboozled about by the final destination of these three points we’ve opted for three different recommended bets instead:

Over 3.5 goals @ 31/20

This fixture is the reverse of the opening-day clash from last season where Manuel Pellegrini’s swashbuckling side set their title-winning stall out early by flattening Newcastle 4-0.

A repeat of that scoreline feels unlikely given City’s strangely off-beat Community shield surrender to Arsenal 3-0.

However, it’s those defensive frailties and the fact that the Citizens both scored and conceded in their five previous pre-season friendlies which add extra credence to this bet.

Both teams to score @ 2/3

Holding that thought a while longer this bet feels like it’s got s decent chance of landing at fairly good odds, made a little chunkier by the fact the Magpies failed to score in three meetings last term.

Newcastle have both score and conceded in four of their eight pre-season games, netting a healthy average of two goals per game.

Siem de Jong to score anytime @ 7/2

The former Ajax skipper is a class act and could turn out to be one of the Premier League signings of the summer as a regular scorer of goals in the Dutch top flight, from a support striker of number 10 role.

De Jong hit the ground running for Alan Pardew in pre-season by notching in his first two Newcastle appearances and could even start as the most advanced player against City.
