Man Utd talisman predicted to win PFA Player of the Year
Published:Everyone loves a prediction in football, whether it’s who’s going to win the big match or who’ll win the league, no one can resist throwing their twopence in.
While we wouldn’t want to take anything away from those Mystic Meg impressionists, they aren’t exactly the hardest picks in the world considering the psychics are choosing from a pool of 20 options.
Taking a crack at which of the 500 or so players in the Premier League will be crowned PFA Player of the Year, as we are about to, really can be bragged about should it play out though.
It can be argued that Burnley’s third choice goalkeeper, such a speck on the Premier League sphere we don’t even know his name, doesn’t have much chance of winning the award. But there’s still a healthy sample size to deliberate over when it comes to stabbing the pin in a list of suitors.
At 16/1 our pick, Wayne Rooney, isn’t at the skinny end of the betting. Chelsea’s Eden Hazard leads the way in Ladbrokes’ market at 5/1 but after a largely anonymous World Cup we doubt the Belgian will warrant the favourites tag come season’s end.
Under Louis van Gaal, Manchester United are due a resurgence and Rooney is likely to be the face of the revival.
The England man, who could well be leading the side by example as captain, was one of a few players to give David Moyes his all last season and, with another disappointing World Cup campaign on the CV, will be desperate to experience some joy on a football field again.
Rooney is surely too long a price to ignore in a market that rates Premier League debutants Alexis Sanchez and Diego Costa with a better chance of winning, despite the last new signing to win the award coming all the way back in 2001/02 with Ruud van Nistelrooy.
