Man United test Real’s resolve with mammoth bid for midfielder

Manchester United’s hankering for a marquee signing this summer has led them to launcha humongous £55m bid for Real Madrid midfielder Angel Di Maria, according to one national newspaper.

It’s also reported that the player himself is keen to seek a move away from the Spanish behemoths, after various acquisitions by Real in recent weeks have thrown Di Maria’s place in the team into serious doubt.

The arrivals of World Cup Golden Boot winner James Rodriguez and Bayern Munich string-puller Toni Kroos, are sure to impinge on the Argentine’s playing time this season.

A move to Old Trafford therefore, where Louis van Gaal would be sure to accommodate the winger-turned centre-midfielder, will surely hold plenty of appeal for one of Madrid’s best performers of last season.

Although Van Gaal has played down the need for significant new arrivals at United this summer, it’s obvious what an enormous boost it would be to the club to tie down a signing of this magnitude, not to mention the quality Di Maria would add to the team.

Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera cost around the £30m apiece and are sure to improve the underperforming squad of last season.

However, once again a truly landmark signing has thus far alluded Van Gaal as it did his predecessor David Moyes during his first transfer window.

In events similar to the ill-fated pursuit and eventual snub if Cesc Fabregas around 12 months ago, efforts to bring in Juventus’ Chilean midfielder star Arturo Vidal this summer, have so far proved futile.

£55m sounds a lot of money but with Champions League outfit Paris St-Germain also keen, United would be right to push the boat put as they start their 5/1-rated quest to win the Premier League imminently.
