Man United set to make double swoop on Serie A stars

Manchester United are linked with new players more often than a Top Gear presenter courts controversy and the latest duo reportedly on the Red Devils’ radar are Freddy Guarin and Mehdi Benatia.

Midweek reports suggest new Old Trafford boss Louis van Gaal has upped his interest in the Inter Milan midfielder and the Roma defender after growing frustrated in his pursuits of Arturo Vidal and Mats Hummels.

Guarin has been the subject of plenty of transfer speculation after starring for Colombia at the World Cup and Van Gaal is said to be more confident of landing his man after learning of Inter’s desire to sign Parma star Jonathan Biabiany.

According to Italian daily Corriere dello Sport, the Milan giants are willing to part company with Guarin in order to convince Biabiany that he will feature at the San Siro.

Guarin remains a fall back option for Van Gaal who is said to be concerned about the fitness of number one target Vidal.

Ever conflicting reports suggest the Chilean has agreed terms with United but the lack of movement in the deal suggests all is not right with the midfielder’s knee injury.

Further down the pitch Van Gaal’s search for defensive reinforcement has switched from Borussia Dortmund to Roma after the Dutchman failed to agree a valuation for Mats Hummels with the Bundesliga outfit.

United, who are priced at 5/1 to reclaim the Premier League crown, are battling the likes of Chelsea and Real Madrid for Roma ace Benatia following Rudi Garcia’s move  for Olympiakos defender Konstantinos Manolas.

Benatia is highly rated and valued at around £30m and while the price will not put the Red Devils off, the Champions League football on offer at Stamford Bridge and the Bernabeu means LVG could have his work cut out to convince the 27-year-old to move to the north-west.
