Liverpool finally set to plug problem position with Spaniard
Published:One of the most protracted transfer sagas of 2014 finally looks set to reach its conclusion, but only after the player in question offers his services for current club Sevilla one last time in the European Super Cup.
Liverpool have been trying to tie down Alberto Moreno for over six months to no avail as they try to solve their shortage of quality left-backs.
The Spanish international, 22, was identified back in January as the man Brendan Rodgers wanted to become first-choice at Anfield, though negotiations with his Spanish employers who rate their full-back very highly have rumbled on.
According to reports those lengthy discussions with the Europa League winners have at last proved fruitful, and Moreno will be sold to Liverpool for a reported fee of £14m.
Firstly though Moreno will be given one last opportunity to wear the club’s colours as Sevilla take on Real Madrid at the Millenium Stadium to contest the European Super Cup.
It’s believed the Sevilla hierarchy wish to give Moreno the opportunity to give the fans an official goodbye before he joins up with last season’s Premier League runners-up.
Critics of Rodgers believe the large influx of signings to Anfield this summer could disrupt the equilibrium built up last season.
However, left-back is certainly an area that needed attention. Rodgers is still loathed to trust Jose Enrique, who missed most of last season through injury, and was forced into fielding either right-footed Glen Johnson or Jon Flanagan there last season.
With the Champions League back on the menu – which Liverpool are 28/1 to win pre-draw – capturing Moreno is essential to Rodgers fight on four fronts.
Meanwhile, the capture of Atletico Madrid right-back Javier Manquillo on loan last season could yet see a very Spanish flavour to the Livepool full-back berths this season.
