Hipster Tipster: Why Juventus, Bayern and Bilbao are my bets

Published:

The Champions League draw was a real cause for celebration in my neck of the woods, with Bertie, Tarquin and the rest of the gang heading down to Hoxton for a spot of watch-a-long drinking games (a shot for every time Luis Figo was spotted in the audience was just one rule).

By the time it was all over I was sloshed with the night ending on a sour note after a heated discussion between myself and Bertie, as to whom out of Henrik Larsson and Jon Dahl Tomasson had the greater impact in the European game, turned ugly.

The next morning I awoke to realise, aghast, that I had failed to complete the necessary research required for my tipster column. But fear not, because the Champions League was on hand to provide me with four pitch-perfect picks to back on Saturday.

Taking in Italy, Germany and Spain, this fabulous-o foursome is available at odds of just under 9/2.

Now I’ll drink to that…make mine a fizzy elderflower though…I’m still feeling weak.

Juventus to beat Chievo @ 8/15

Having holidayed with family in Turin for several summers as a youngster, I know that they take their football pretty seriously down there – so serious they even tried to rig results! But joking aside, the Old Lady and Serie A title holders should see off Chievo, having won on their last four meetings.

Bayern Munich to beat Schalke @ 1/2

Oh Pep, Pep, Pep how I have missed your bristled bald head and tiki-taka ways during this summer. Live on BT Sport, I will be watching this one from the comfort of my IKEA Poang chair, safe in the knowledge Bayern have won their last seven against a Schalke, who lost to Hannover last time out.

Roma to beat Fiorentina @ 8/11

Rudi Garcia is already something of a footballing Jesus after completing a water-to-wine like miracle in making Gervinho look like a superstar. A great night at the Stadio Olimpico awaits with the Romans winning each of their last four Serie A encounters with their Florence rivals.

Athletic Bilbao to beat Levante @ 4/11

I assumed there had been a Ceefax-style spelling error when Bilbao were drawn in the Champions League but I was proven incorrect. The other Athletic club dispatched my beloved Rafa Benitez’s Napoli in midweek and should make short work of Levante, who lost last time out to Villarreal.
