Goals on the cards as Coventry host Cardiff in Capital One Cup

After coming close to bagging three out of three of our best bets on the Capital One Cup’s opening fixture between Carlisle and Derby, we return with three cracking tips for Coventry’s match with Cardiff.

Cardiff to score the first goal @ 13/20

The Bluebirds have scored the first goal in seven of the last eight encounters between the two sides, all of which came in the Championship since 2008.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side also bagged the opener in their first game back in the second-tier at the weekend, while Coventry conceded first in their 3-2 loss to Bradford City.

Both teams to score @ 2/3

The Sky Blues were among the most entertaining sides in the country last season, scoring 74 and conceding 77 in their 46 league games, an average of 3.28 goals per match.

Judging by their 3-2 opening-day loss, Coventry have not got any more boring over the summer, while both teams found the net in Cardiff’s 1-1 draw with Blackburn, as well as four of their last six pre-season friendlies.

Cardiff struggled to keep their opponents at bay in the Premier League last term, conceding 74 goals, and having lost Steven Caulker this summer they are unlikely to stop a prolific Coventry side at Sixfields.

Peter Whittingham to score at any time @ 10/3

The Cardiff midfielder ranks Coventry among his favourite opponents, scoring against them in all-but one of the six most recent matches between the two sides.

Whittingham also has a decent record in the Capital One Cup as a whole, notching five times in 19 appearances, although he was not involved in Cardiff’s participation in the tournament in each of the past two seasons.

Assuming he is in the starting line-up, it’s worth backing the 29-year-old to open his account for the season.
