Chelsea keeper likely to be pawned off to make way for youngster

The age-old mathematical problem of two-into-one not going was never more appropriately applied than to Chelsea’s goalkeeping situation.

Unlike the vast majority of Europe’s top clubs Chelsea currently have, in goalkeeping terms, an embarrassment of riches.

Having decided to recall La Liga-winning goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to Stamford Bridge after watching him flourish at Atletico Madrid on loan, Jose Mourinho must now decide if he is willing to make him his new number one.

Of course, the only problem with that is the man he would be replacing is another of the world’s very best stoppers, Petr Cech.

Since signing Cech, 32, from Rennes a decade ago Mourinho has witnessed the Czech international become integral to all the trophy-laden years which have followed.

However, in 22-year-old Courtois he has the future of Chelsea at his disposal and a keeper already cementing his reputation as one of the finest around.

It’s a tough decision, but the fact Mourinho installed the Belgian international for the whole of the Blues’ last pre-season match against Real Sociedad has led many to believe he will be chosen ahead of Cech as first choice in the Premier League.

If this proves to be the case then Cech has already stated he won’t stay around to play second fiddle to the younger man, leading to much interest from the continent.

Big spenders Real Madrid, Paris St-Germain and Monaco are all thought to be keeping very close tabs on the unfolding events in London.

Courtois could be in line for his Premier League debut against Burnley on Monday night, where Chelsea are currently priced at 17/20 to keep the Clarets out.
