Cavalryman to charge to another success this season

Published:

The Ebor Festival has reached its half-way mark, we may have already seen some of the best three-year-old colts and fillie around strut their stuff, but there are still plenty of opportunities to top up our accounts this week.

From the hard staying 2m trip of the Lonsdale Cup, to the mad 5f dash of the Nunthorpe Stakes there is something for everyone on the Knavesmire on Friday.

Here’s who we at Ladbrokes News fancy for the penultimate day of the meeting.

NAP – Cavalryman – 14:30 Lonsdale Cup

Age shows no sign in catching up with this ultra-genuine eight-year-old.

His form this season reads 1121, with victory in the Group 2 Goodwood Cup and the Princess of Wales’s Stakes at Newmarket’s July meeting the highlights.

He is proven over both the distance and on the ground and will be tough to beat with a number of doubts hanging over his rivals.

Pale Mimosa is in form, but yet to prove she is top class. Both Estimate and High Jinx will want plenty more rain to be seen at their best. While last year’s victor Times Up has been hopelessly out of form since.

The Godolphin horse simply has to be the selection.

NB – Pearl Castle – 13:55 Sky Bet Transfer Fund Stakes

Last seen running out a more than respectable sixth in the Galway Hurdle, John Quinn’s dual-purpose gelding returns back on the flat with a big chance.

His last two runs on the level have been on the Knavesmire, running out a victor over course and distance in June, before finishing fourth next time out in a decent handicap.

The three that finished ahead of him that day either won or came second on their next outing, so the form is working out nicely.

With talented claimer Joe Doyle on board, the Triumph Hurdle seventh will effectively be running off a 1lb lower mark than her last York run.

This Group level hurdler looks a top each way bet.

Lively Longshot – Astaire – 15:40 Nunthorpe Stakes

In what is such an open race, a chance on last year’s Gimcrack winner at York running into the money is worth a shot.

That Group 1 win followed his maiden victory on the Knavesmire and was followed up with a runner-up performance in the Clipper Logisitics Stakes last year.

You will need to forgive a stinker of a run last time out, but he is certainly intriguing on a first try at the minimum 5f.

Kevin Ryan’s charge finished ahead of Hot Streak in the Middle Park Stakes last season, yet is more than double the price.

He may find a few too strong, but cannot be ignored at the price.
