Bayern v Wolfsburg: Wolves to make injury-hit FCB work for win

Published:

The new Bundesliga season gets underway with reigning champions Bayern Munich starting the defence of their crown against Wolfsburg.

Pep Guardiola’s side are as short as 1/4 for a home victory, while Wolfsburg are 9/1 to cause an upset with the draw available at 11/2.

With no value in backing a Bayern win and a whole host of players unavailable to Guardiola, Oliver Yew has come up with three alternative bets for the opening night of the German top flight.

Under 2.5 goals @ 21/10

It’s fair to say Bayern Munich have not hit the ground running during pre-season after defeats to the MLS All Star Team and rivals Borussia Dortmund in the German Super Cup.

Last season’s champions bounced back in good style against third tier side SC Preussen but with Jerome Boateng suspended and Javi Martinez, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Franck Ribery and Thiago Alcantara all out, the visit of Wolfsburg promises to be a difficult assignment.

Der FCB only managed a 1-0 win over Wolfsburg, who finished in fifth, at the Allianz Arena last season and with the visitors strengthening significantly again it promises to be a tight affair again.

Wolfsburg to win +2 @ 23/20

Die Wölfe were comprehensively beaten the last time these two sides met in the Bundesliga but with the arrivals Josuha Guilavogui from Atletico Madrid and Nicklas Bendtner on a free they appear to be much stronger than the side that finished just one point away from Champions League qualification.

Guilavogui’s partnership with Luiz Gustavo at the heart of the Wolfsburg midfield could be crucial this season and this solid platform could make life difficult for Bayern in the season opener.

Robert Lewandowski to score first @ 5/2

While we are predicting a tough nigh for Guardiola’s men, they still possess enough firepower to claim an opening day win.

The goals may not rain in for the defending champions but if anyone is likley to bag a goal it will be new signing Robert Lewandowski.

The former Dortmund man has hit three goals in pre-season for his new club and while he could not get on the scoresheet against his former employers last week, he will be desperate to grab an opening day goal.
