Arsenal Team Guide: Ramsey still the main man for the Gunners

Published:

Team Name: Arsenal

Manager: Arsene Wenger

Last Season: 4th

Who they’ve signed so far: Alexis Sanchez (Barcelona, 30m), Mathieu Debuchy (Newcastle, 12m), David Ospina (Nice, 3m), Calum Chambers (Southampton, 10m)

Out of the exit door:Bacary Sagna (Manchester City, free), Lukasz Fabianski (Swansea City, free), Nicklas Bendtner (released), ParkChu-young(released), Thomas Eisfeld (Fulham, undisclosed), Carl Jenkinson,(West Ham, loan), Benik Afobe (MK Dons, loan).

Star Man: Aaron Ramsey

Its a difficult decision to overlook the likes of Mesut Ozil or newboy Alexis Sanchez as Arsenals star man for the upcoming season but Aaron Ramseys performances last year have earned him that title. The Welsh international scored 16 goals for the Gunners, including the winner in the FA Cup final, on his way to picking up the clubsPlayer of the Seasonaward.

Injury robbed the Gunners of his services for three months of the season and with it arguably their title chances. Keep the Welshman fit and it could be an entirely different story.

Under the Radar: JoelCampbell

We have all seen what Joel Campbell can do after his performances for Costa Rica at the World Cup but he is still an unknown quantity in the Premier League.

Campbell shot to prominence with the Arsenal fans after scoring against Manchester United in last season’s Champions League but it was the 21-year-old’s goal scoring performance in the Emirates Cup that was enough to convince Arsene Wenger to give him a chance to make his name with the north London club and it could be the best decision the Frenchman makes this summer. With pace and power in abundance expect to see the Costa Rican international terrorising defences up and down the country.

See Joel Campbell score his first Arsenal goal during the Emirates Cup match against Benfica:

Team Liability: Mathieu Flamini

Mathieu Flamini’s presence in north London adds plenty of bite to Arsenals midfield but at times he can look like a graduate of the Paul Scholes school of tackling.

The 30-year-old, erm well renowned the for his flying scissor tackle, crunches into tackles all day for his side but with 10yellowsand one red card to his name last season he is no good to Wengers men on the sidelines!

Former Tottenham star Vedran Corluka knows all about Flamini’s tackling prowess back when the Frenchman was at AC Milan…

Title Odds:13/2

Best Bet:Arsenal to finish as Top London Club @ 9/4

Our Verdict:

Could this finally be the year the Gunners mount a serious title challenge? Wenger has the attacking talent at his disposal to rival any of the Premier Leagues top clubs but the key could be adding a defensive midfielder to go toe-to-toe physically in the matches against the big boys. Do just that and an improved Arsenal squad could follow up FA Cup glory by lifting the Premier League title.
