Albany third Patience Alexander best bet on a busy afternoon

Published:

It may be divisive amongst racing fans but the Shergar Cup returns to Ascot today, and the competition is sure to be fierce between the four teams.

Europe will be looking to secure back-to-back runnings of the competition, but for those after some non-team based racing, there are cracking cards at Haydock and Newmarket today.

What’s more, back a winner at 4/1 or bigger in any race shown live on More 4 or Channel 4 and Ladbrokes will give you a free bet, up to £25.*

To help you find those winners we’ve gone through the cards and present you with our best bets of the day.

NAP – Patience Alexander – 13:50 Haydock

David Evan’s two-year-old battled bravely in Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot, clinging on to finish third, having travelled strongly throughout.

A drop back to the minimum distance looks just the ticket for the classy juvenile.

Her penultimate run saw her keep on well to land a Listed race from Richard Hannon’s Tiggy Wiggy.

That form now looks rock solid, with the second subsequently running out an emphatic winner of the Wetherbys Super Sprint.

Despite having to give weight all round, the daughter of Kodiac should have far too much for this field.

NB – True Story – 14:55 Haydock

After opening his campaign in superb fashion in the Feilden Stakes, winning by seven lengths, things haven’t gone to plan for True Story.

He encountered trouble in running in the Dante, before finding the top table slightly out of reach in both the Derby and Eclipse. But now the Godolphin colt has a chance to bounce back.

The fact that he was sent off 8/1 third favourite for the Classic at Epsom shows how highly thought of Saeed bin Suroor’s charge is, and with conditions in his favour at the Lancashire track, he should go very close.

Likely to be vying for favouritism is Hillstar, who has become frustrating to follow. A trio of 2s in his form says it all, and this drop back in trip looks unlikely to suit. It looks well worth taking on Sir Michael Stoute’s four year old.

Lively Longshot – Bantam – 14:05 Ascot

In a race in which you can only guarantee that half the field will see out the mile and a half trip, a chance has to be taken on Ed Dunlop’s filly.

She had no luck in running on seasonal return, being hampered on two occasions, before being eased towards the end, so a line can be drawn through that performance.

On previous form, she looks more than capable of defying a handicap mark of 89. Expect to see this one staying on late at the Berkshire track.
