West Ham need USA super-sub to help instil attacking style
Published:If Sam Allardyce isn’t pouring over this World Cup looking for players to deliver West Ham’s desired attacking style, it’d be like Harry Redknapp cycling to training on transfer deadline day.
Although the wheels have been put in motion to break free from his conservative style – Mauro Zarate is their newest striker while Teddy Sheringham is back as attacking coach – Allardyce will be aware that more needs to be done.
Full-back is a position that can not only be used as a superb attacking weapon, but is also one in need of replenishment at Upton Park.
Luckily, the USA’s display against Belgium unearthed a player who can really excite the Hammers faithful.
Right-back Fabian Johnson had been a stand-out performer for Jurgen Klinsmann’s side in Brazil and when he pulled up lame in the 32nd minute against Belgium, the collective deflation of a nation could be heard globally.
On trotted DeAndre Yedlin, a 20-year-old full-back out of Seattle, in his place and soon America’s lungs were full of hope again.
Yedlin’s first involvement in proceedings was to tear past Eden Hazard and win a corner for his side and, from that moment, the tone of his evening was set.
Searing pace and fearlessness in attack are the kind of characteristics that West Ham, who are 6/1 for relegation, must employ in their full-backs in order to achieve their offensive goals.
On this display, Yedlin has both in abundance and almost conjured up comparisons as the American, right-sided, Gareth Bale with his speed and dribbling prowess and potential to convert into a winger further along his career.
It seemed most of America were surprised by Yedlin’s cameo too, as just 42 senior MLS appearances meant he was firmly under the radar prior to these finals, although like us, they’re expecting some interest in him now:
DeAndre Yedlin is 20 folks. He was playing college soccer 19 months ago and now he’s shining in a World Cup knockout round match. Impressive

DeAndre Yedlin is coming of age awfully fast.

Wouldn’t be surprised if DeAndre Yedlin’s agent gets some phone calls after this game. #LandonCenter
