Uruguayan hitman could be last piece in Arsenal title puzzle

Thanks to their prudent approach to transfers, Arsenal were always reckoned to be one side who would benefit massively from the introduction of UEFA’s FFP regulations.

But few would have expected the manner with which the Gunners have taken advantage of their European rivals’ need to balance their books.

In the past two years, Arsenal have brought in Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez from Real Madrid and Barcelona, with the Spanish sides forced to cover the cost of moves for Gareth Bale and Luis Suarez.

The arrival of the Chilean this summer has made the Gunners’ 13/2 price to win the Premier League a very tasty proposition, but another South American could make Arsene Wenger’s side even more formidable.

Having already tasted UEFA’s wrath due to their excessive spending, Paris St-Germain are playing dangerous game this summer with their mega-move for David Luiz likely to be followed by a similarly expensive outlay for Angel di Maria.

The French club will surely have to sell a couple of players to make some of that money back and after a frustrating first season, Edinson Cavani might be on the market.

The Uruguayan has long been linked with a move to the Premier League and Manchester United are reportedly sniffing around him again this summer, but it is Arsenal who are in most need of the 27-year-old’s firepower.

Cavani bagged 104 goals in 138 games in all competitions during his three-year stint at Napoli, and even playing second fiddle to Zlatan Ibrahimovic did not stop him notching 25 in 43 for PSG last season.

Arsenal’s need for a top striker was evident last year as Olivier Giroud failed to provide the goals needed to keep them in the title hunt.

Signing Cavani would give the Gunners a top-class forward to feed off the supply of chances provided by Ozil and Sanchez and hand their title chances a massive boost.
