Taylor to beat Van Gerwen in World Matchplay final best bets

Published:

It may be rather predictable, but it doesn’t make it any less exciting as the top two darts players in the world do battle again for a major trophy.

Phil Taylor and Michael van Gerwen have both plotted safe paths through to the World Matchplay final at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool, with one player looking for his seventh consecutive title in the competition, and the other seeking his first.

Taylor, the six-time champ, is the marginal favourite for the duel, which will be the pair’s 35th, and is taken to claim another victory among our three best bets for the encounter:

Taylor to win @ 4/5

You won’t find many better prices on the Stoke darting wonder when he takes to the oche, as he’s usually far too short to back, but the fact he’s facing Van Gerwen gives him much more appeal in the match betting market.

Not only is his price appealing, but his record over the Dutchman also attracts having won 22 of the 34 previous battles to date.

Over 17.5 180s in the match @ 10/11

In a first-to-18 encounter there’ll be plenty of chances for maximum scores between two of the heavier scorers in the game.

Both men have flexed their lipstick-targetting muscle in the tournament so far, with Van Gerwen firing in 26 180s so far and Taylor registering 21.

Highest Checkout over 143.5 @ 5/6

Their love of high scoring means there’s just as much chance of a lofty checkout as there is a 180.

Both men have finished a leg on a higher score than the mark set for this final, with the bald Dutchman just creeping over the line with a tournament-best checkout of 145, while Taylor sails over comfortably at 160.
