QPR target drop-rivals with World Cup bronze medalist swoop
Harry Redknapp clearly had his television switched on for this summer’s World Cup, as the QPR manager has identified Holland and Aston Villa star Ron Vlaar as a chief transfer target.
‘Concrete Ron’ as he’s become affectionately known, drew universal praise for his commanding defensive displays for the Oranje in Brazil.
The current Aston Villa skipper was undoubtedly one of the best central defenders at the tournament, but now he’s entered into the final year of his contract, QPR are ready to test the midlands club’s resolve with a £4m bid.
If the R’s can prise the 29-year-old away from Villa, it would be a significant boon to their chances of remaining in the Premier League this season, while simultaneously putting a dent in Paul Lambert’s own survival bid.
As it stands, both clubs are among the leading contenders for relegation, with QPR deemed most in danger at 19/10 and Villa’s chances of the drop are rated at 13/5.
Although long-term casualty from last season Jores Okore will be back in contention, Villa can hardly afford to lose such a seasoned, quality campaigner as on-pitch leader.
The previous two seasons, the largely inexperienced squad Lambert has assembled at Villa Park has scrambled to safety by just five points each time.
Meanwhile, Redknapp has already added BBC World Cup pundit and former Manchester United skipper Rio Ferdinand to his back line at Loftus Road.
There are also rumours afoot that the former West Ham and Tottenham gaffer is still intent on Cardiff defender Steven Caulker.
Vlaar’s marshalling of Lionel Messi in Holland’s semi final against Argentina sticks out as one of the defensive displays of the competition as the Dutchman expertly frustrated the twinkle-toed
Golden Ball winner.
