Newcastle United’s £35m man linked with return from West Ham

West Ham United’s busy summer of spending could also see Andy Carroll make a sensational return to St James’ Park with the Hammers rumoured to be considering the sale of the striker following a frustrating season at Upton Park.

The 25-year-old scored just twice in the Premier League last term as part of a campaign in which injuries restricted the forward to just 15 top-flight appearances.

And with Sam Allardyce already busy bringing in alternative striking options in the form of South American duo Mauro Zarate and Enner Valencia, reports are beginning to circulate suggesting that Carroll’s time at the club could soon be coming to a close.

The good news for Carroll is that he is already attracting interest from hometown club Newcastle United with the Magpies keen to bring in additional goalscorers following a season in which first-choice forward Papiss Cisse has struggled for form.

Sold to Liverpool for £35m back in January 2011, the Englishman managed just six league goals in 44 appearances for the Reds before being shipped off to West Ham on loan.

It was widely believed that, prior to his Hammers move, Carroll was only keen on a switch back to the Magpies.

But with Newcastle showing little in the way of interest at the time, the Gateshead-born striker instead opted to move to West Ham.

Seven goals in 24 games followed before he completed a £15m permanent switch to the Londoners, but after a poor campaign at the club it would appear Carroll may finally get his wish with Newcastle thought to be lining up a bid for the hometown hero.

The 25-year-old managed 33 goals in 91 games for the Toon in a promising initial spell in his career.

If he can rediscover that kind of form and help Newcastle push up the table, it could be a reunion to savour.
