Is Man United’s Galaxy romp a sign of things to come?

Published:

The Louis van Gaal era got off to a flying start with Manchester United hitting LA Galaxy for seven in the first game of pre-season.

Danny Welbeck kicked things off, while two apiece from Wayne Rooney, Ashley Young and defender Reece James sealed a fine win.

But is the Galaxy game a sign of things to come?

Van Gaal is expected to make his mark in his first season at Old Trafford, with last year’s seventh-placed team priced at 6/4 to win any major trophy at the end of his first year.

It’s 4/11 that the Red Devils end the season empty handed though so Van Gaal still has his work cut out and deals to pull off before the season starts for real.

United are 11/2 third favourites to win the Premier League but with no European football to distract his men, the Dutchman will be setting his sights on more domestic silverware.

With that in mind it could be worth backing United to end their 10-year wait for an FA Cup triumph in one of two double bets on offer at Ladbrokes.

The bookmaker has priced up a league and FA Cup double, something United achieved in 1994 and 1996, at 33/1, while a double consisting of the FA and League Cups is available at 40/1.

The benchmark for Van Gaal was set well and truly high by Sir Alex Ferguson in 1999 when United landed a historic treble of the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League.

Those heights are not available to Van Gaal this season but a treble of his own would instantly see him sewn in to the rich tapestry of United’s history.

With that in mind, optimistic United fans could be tempted by the 200/1 about the Red Devils landing the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup at the end of their new manager’s first campaign in charge.
