Man United should swerve Carvalho and plump for Real deal
Why settle for sparkling wine when there’s champagne available? Manchester United have long been linked with a move for Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho, but there’s better on the market.
Angel Di Maria’s Real Madrid future has been in the balance for some time and United should cash-in on the Spanish club’s strange ambivalence towards one of their best players – while some sources even claim an offer has been made.
Di Maria is currently playing a starring role for Argentina over at the World Cup – where his countrymen are the 11/10 favourites to beat quarter-final opponents Belgium – as speculation increases he could be pawned off to make room for James Rodriguez.
22-year-old Carvalho certainly has plenty of potential to become a top central midfielder, but meeting the rumoured £37.5m release clause is a lot of wonga to take a chance on.
Whereas the man nicknamed ‘The Noodle’ at the Bernabeu due to his lean physique, could be available for more-or-less the same price only he is a proven world-class operator in his prime.
Di Maria only turned 26 this year and following his conversion from left winger to box-to-box midfielder for Los Blancos, he could fill a problem position at Old Trafford.
Marouane Fellaini proved a fish-out-of-water in that role last season and most Red Devils fans will expect the £27m flop to move on this summer.
With Louis van Gaal likely to operate with three central midfielders there is certainly room for Di Maria to fill one of the slots he’s excelled in at Madrid, even though Ander Herrera has bolstered those options already.
It would be some statement to sign Di Maria as well following such a miserable 2013/14 season.
