Liverpool to use some Suarez swag to chase left-back again

Published:

Armed with a boat load of cash thanks to the sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona, it seems Liverpool are about to weigh anchor in the transfer market again, by reviving their interest in Sevilla left-back Alberto Moreno.

The proposed deal had looked dead in the water some weeks ago with Liverpool failing to meet Sevilla’s monetary demands for the defender.

However, Suarez’s sensational £75m switch to Barca has shifted the financial goal posts for the Premier League runners-up, with Brendan Rodgers still very eager to address the problem left-back position.

Last season, the left-sided defensive berth was regularly filled by right-footed Jon Flanagan or Valencia loanee Aly Cissokho, who was out of his depth in the English top-flight.

Although Rodgers has previous first-choice left-back Jose Enrique back in the mix after missing the vast majority of the 2013/14 campaign, the Northern Irishman is rumoured to prefer the Spaniard only as back-up for the forthcoming season.

After a stand-out campaign for Sevilla which resulted in Europa League glory, 22-year-old Moreno ended up being one of seven players cut from Vicente del Bosque’s provisional World Cup squad.

Meanwhile, according to reports in Spain, Liverpool have sent top transfer bargainer Ian Ayre to Seville to thrash out improved terms.

While Moreno looks increasingly likely to join up with the 9/1 title shots, a player moving in the opposite direction is Spanish striker Iago Aspas – who is set to join Sevilla on loan after failing to find the net during his entire debut season.

If the Moreno deal can be sanctioned, the Sevilla man could well be sharing the Melwood medical room with Benfica winger Lazar Markovic, who is rumoured to be very close to completing a £19m move.
