Go high for English golds as Commonwealth Games are on British soil

Bradley Wiggins is back competing for a probable two golds, Mo Farah will be a heavy favourite to complete another middle-distance track double, Tom Daley will be on the boards and Nicola Adams will be back in the boxing ring.

The English team is certainly not short of star names, which includes 129 athletes, 31 cyclists and 39 swimmers across 17 different sports.

In total, there are 261 gold medals up for grabs in Glasgow, which is a drop of 11 from four years ago in Delhi when England finished with 37 golds, to go alongside 59 silvers and 46 bronze medals.

England have ranked in the top three for medals in every Commonwealth Games since the event’s inception in 1930, but they have made a habit of finishing a long way shy of Australia in the last four competitions.

The over/under betting line for English golds at the 2014 Commonwealths is 42.5, with both sides of the coin priced up at 5/6.

Logic would dictate to limbo below this line, as England have only bettered 37 golds once in the last five Commonwealth instalments.

However, this was when it was hosted in Manchester in 2002 and the only other occasion that it was held in Britain in fairly recent memory was in its previous visit to Scotland, when 52 golds were worn in Edinburgh in 1986.

Given the inclusion of a record 22 para-sport events in Glasgow, this bodes well for English medals, while the fact that the walking events in athletics, Greco-Roman wrestling and synchronised swimming have been removed, shouldn’t hurt the medal table too much, if at all.
