Germany can make it three in a row, say Ladbrokes

Germany can go on to dominate world football for years to come after pipping Argentina to the World Cup at the Maracana in Rio.

That is according to leading bookmaker Ladbrokes, with Die Mannschaft promptly priced as 10/3 favourites for the Euro 2016 tournament in France after Mario Goetze’s extra-time volley secured a fourth World Cup victory for the Germans.

Ladbrokes has also installed Joachim Loew’s side as the jolly to win the next World Cup – in Russia in 2018 – with odds of 11/2 saying that Goetze, Mueller, Schweinsteiger and co. can defend their crown in four years.

Anyone who expects the young German outfit to dominate can also get 20/1 on a three-trophy haul if the Germans go on to claim the next two tournaments.

The betting suggests that Argentina will get their chance to avenge the extra-time defeat in Russia, with La Albiceleste priced as 7/1 second favourites to lift the trophy in Moscow.

However, Lionel Messi’s disappointment at failing to add an international accolade to his plethora of domestic honours looks set to continue, with odds of 1/10 on the diminutive Barcelona forward never lifting the World Cup trophy.

It’s 5/1 that he can go one better than his efforts in Brazil but with the next tournament taking place in Europe, many feel his best chance has now come and gone.

The World Cup has only once been won by a non-European team when held in Europe – Brazil took the crown in Sweden in 1950 – so history suggests Argentina could struggle there.

Messi will also be 35-years-old when the tournament moves to the neutral venue that is Qatar and will surely be less influential than he is at present – assuming he’s even in the squad at that stage.

Therefore, unless a new Argentine superstar emerges to carry, what in all honesty is an overachieving side, all the way to a final Messi’s dream looks to be in tatters.
