Germany odds-on for World Cup glory after obliterating Brazil

LADBROKES ENHANCED ACCAS

Do not adjust your television sets was the message from BBC pundit Gary Lineker for viewers tuning in at half-time to find Germany 5-0 in front of hosts Brazil, in what became a surreal evening in Belo Horizonte which saw the hosts eliminated in crushing fashion 7-1.

In light of Germany’s record-breaking semi-final pummelling of Luiz Felipe Scolari’s side, Ladbrokes have now adjusted the odds to make Die Mannschaft the clear 8/11 favourites to lift the trophy.

Holland, who play Argentina in the other semi final are deemed 7/2 shots, while Lionel Messi and co are slightly shorter at 5/2 to win the competition.

One particularly unlucky punter was only minutes away from landing a £2000 jackpot from a stake of just £2, after having the audacity to back a 7-0 German triumph at odds of 1000/1.

Meanwhile, shell-shocked Brazil boss Scolari is given odds of 9/2 by the firm to walk away from his post before the third-placed play-off.

Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said: “We’ve never known anything like it. Not a single person saw the 7-1 coming and while the consolation was deemed worthless in commentary, it was anything but for the thousands of customers who backed both teams to score in the match.”

He added: “We’re not prepared to offer huge odds about Scolari walking before the third place play off. When it comes to a major shakeup in the post-mortem, all bets are off.”

Four goals in the space of six chaotic first-half minutes simply blew a ragged Brazilian side away as Joachim Loew’s clinical German team took full advantage of the hosts’ naivety.

It’s difficult to see any side preventing Germany from winning after such a marauding display, but in this World Cup, nothing is ever as it seems.
