Galway Races: 3 to take on the red-hot ‘King of Ballybrit’

Published:

Ireland’s favourite week-long nag festival is well under way on the west coast as Galway heads into day three, along with Ladbrokes.com’s cracking Dermot Weld-insurance offer.

If any of your picks finishes second to a Weld winner at Ballybrit, Ladbrokes will refund losing stakes up to £/€25*.

We’ll flag up the crack dual-trainer’s hotpots, but with such an offer in tow there’s value to be had in variety on the Atlantic coast.

NAP – 3.00 – Most Peculiar @ 5/1

Weld favourite Tandem is a credible challenger, having placed at Group-level on the flat and in a race the veteran trainer has won three times in the last five years.

However, dominant hurdles-handler Willie Mullins has a live challenger in five-year-old gelding Most Peculiar, who continually improved prior to his first win last March and has repeated the pattern this season, with a recent second in Cork the best of three showings since.

NB – 4.45 – Thomas Wedgewood @ 6/1

The 27-time top trainer at the festival has hotpot Whitey O ‘Gwaun here, but Weld hasn’t taken this 1m4f race in the last three years and is up against a master over the distance.

Aidan O’Brien’s Thomas Wedgewood, under the super-heavyweight trainer’s daughter Sarah, rates a decent alternative, as the three-year-old is unexposed and certain to come on from his first run.

Lively Longshot – 6.05 – Al Fahidi @ 25/1

Weld runs well-fancied Moonbi Creek in this highly competitive renewal, and the seven-year-old is not without a chance after making the first four – in fourteen-strong fields – in each of his last four runs.

That being said, take him on at much tastier odds with Andy Oliver’s relatively unexposed four-year-old Al Fahidi, a filly that has slid down the handicap to a mark that looks competitive and got a good good draw, which should bode well in this 1m event.
