From Fowler to Furyk – 5 players in hunt for T10 finish at Hoylake

Published:

The Open Championship looks as wide open a contest as ever with last week’s Scottish Open winner Justin Rose the 14/1 favourite with Ladbrokes to lift the Claret Jug at Royal Liverpool.

There’s plenty of value to be had in the outright marker for the 143rd Open but with markets galore available now’s the time to look further afield with Ladbrokes News giving you the lowdown on five players to keep an eye on for a top 10 finish at Hoylake…

Henrik Stenson @ 11/8

The Swede knows his way around a links golf course having finished runner-up to Phil Mickelson in both links events last year. The world no. 2 has also been in excellent form this year, especially in recent months, having produced top 10 finishes in five of his last six events. He can continue his recent run of form in Liverpool this week.

Martin Kaymer @ 13/8

It’s been a week to remember for Germany after the country’s footballers ended a 24-year wait for another World Cup success and Martin Kaymer will be hoping to keep Germany at the forefront of world sport in Liverpool this week. The 29-year-old has been in winning form in recent months as his Players Championship and U.S. Open wins have proved and with pin-point accuracy needed to master Hoylake, the German is a serious contender for victory let alone a top10 finish.

Rickie Fowler @ 3/1

The American has peaked at the right times this year to produce excellent performances at the Masters (5th) and the U.S. Open (tied 2nd). Once again Fowler seems to have come good just before a major championship after his eighth-place finish at the Scottish Open last week. Not only does this result show he is in good form but it also shows he can handle the challenges of links golf so expect a strong performance from the 25-year-old at Hoylake.

Ian Poulter @ 5/1

There is nothing Poults loves more than to mount a challenge at the Open. In 2008 the European Ryder Cup star finished runner-up to Padraig Harrington and last year a superb final round 67 saw him finish in a tie for third at Muirfield. Despite an injury scare in the build-up to this year’s event expect to see Poulter’s colourful outfits deep into the weekend at Hoylake.

Jim Furyk @ 5/1

Accuracy will play a key part at this year’s Open Championship and there are few as accurate in the professional game as Jim Furyk. The rough is set to be tall and thick at Royal Liverpool and players will need to hit the fairways if they are to mount a serious challenge. While the Open is not a major Furyk is expected to win – conditions on Merseyside could just play into his hands.
