4 Championship transfers to shape your season’s betting

Published:

It seemed nobody told the Championship that the World Cup was happening, as the ‘cream’ of the second tier have been busy interpreting their scouts’ notes and hoovering up all the under-the-radar leftovers from the top table.

There’ll be more to come before the klaxon sounds for 2014/15 kick-off, but we’ve distilled a few signings in the vat of perfect punting to bring you the best window-related bets for the Champo season ahead…

Oriol Riera from Osasuna to Wigan = Wigan to win the Championship @ 9/1

The Latics claimed just 25 points from their first 19 Championship fixtures of last term under Owen Coyle and were languishing in 14th when Uwe Rosler came in, with the German helping them bank 48 more from their remaining 27 games – to finish in the playoffs – and reach the FA Cup semi-final.

Just imagine how well Wigan will go with the former Manchester City striker in charge from the off in 2014/15, especially after signing a striker who scored more goals last term than any other in La Liga’s bottom half – bar Cardiff newboy Javi Guerra – with 13 for relegated Osasuna.

Matej Vydra from West Brom back to Watford = Watford to be promoted @ 13/2

After finding Premier League-level a little too hot last term, Vydra has dropped back down to the place he loves the most.

The Czech Republic international, who’s still owned by Serie A side Udinese, struck an impressive 20 times in just 27 Championship starts for the Hornets in 2012/13 when, under Gianfranco Zola, they missed out on top-flight promotion through the playoffs.

With Vydra back and last term’s 24-goal star Troy Deeney set to stick around, the Pozzo family plaything look a wild price to make it back into the big time.

Clayton Donaldson and Wes Thomas from Brentford and Rotherham to Birmingham = Birmingham top-ten finish @ 5/1

Last season’s League One hotshots Donaldson and Thomas, who struck 22 times in 60 combined appearances in England’s third tier, have abandoned the aforementioned promoted pair in favour of the second city’s second club.

Brum’s 2013/14 campaign was a disaster that very nearly ended in relegation, but the dreadful off-field issues that marred that campaign seemed to have quietened down considerably.

Coach Lee Clark has declared himself happy with the club’s eight signings so far, which also include defenders Jonathan Grounds, Grant Hall, Gavin Gunning, and David Edgar.
