3 reasons Chelsea should keep Atletico target over Belgian star

Published:

Having publically derided his cast of striking options last season, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was always going to make a shake-up of his front men a priority in the transfer market.

Things are gathering momentum at 10/1 Champions League shots too, as two misfiring members of Chelsea’s centre-forward stable have left, with Demba Ba joining Besiktas and veteran Samuel Eto’o released.

Meanwhile, £32m Atletico Madrid man Diego Costa has finally completed one of the most protracted transfers in living memory.

However, with Costa now the clear first choice to play the lone striker role at Stamford Bridge, Mourinho must decide on the futures of Fernando Torres, a target for former club Atleti and Belgian ace Romelu Lukaku, whom Everton are desperate to sign.

Here are three reasons to keep their record signing:

Lukaku’s relationship with Mourinho

Like any top manager Mourinho is unwavering in his ways and happily discards any player that doesn’t fit his tactical master plan, just ask Juan Mata or Iker Casillas.

He clearly fell out with Lukaku after arriving back at the Bridge and there’s only room for one of them in west London.

Torres scores goals in Europe

Admittedly, Torres’ record of five Premier League goals last season was verging on pathetic for a £50m striker.

However, the Spain international showed a knack for scoring in the Champions League last season, scoring four times in the competition and Mourinho is desperate to land this trophy for the Blues.

Torres can show his ‘compatriot’ the way to make an instant impact in England

Stretch the memory banks back to the 2007/08 season and a certain floppy-haired young Spaniard took the Premier League by storm, hitting 24 top-flight goals.

El Nino may have misplaced his mojo, but who better to impart the way to crack the English code to his international teammate?
