3 prime candidates Wenger can get to play up front at Arsenal

Published:

After Arsene Wenger finally saw fit to break the £30m mark on a single player twice in the last 12 months, Arsenal fans will have been forgiven for expecting yet more cash to be splashed on a striker this summer.

However, leopards rarely (if ever) change their spots and it appears Arsenal’s boss is now content to put the piggy bank away once more after welcoming Alexis Sanchez to the club.

“Up front we don’t need any more, maybe I will still bring in one centre-back. I will bring in a goalkeeper for sure and we are still out there to strengthen our squad,” said the Frenchman.

This would appear to out the kybosh on either Mario Balotelli or Karim Benzema coming through the Emirates door then, but with only Olivier Giroud as a proper world class centre-forward at the club, Wenger must have something in mind.

We think wily old Wenger will happily convert any of these three men into strikers for the forthcoming campaign.

Alexis Sanchez

The capture of Chile’s World Cup star for £32m has seen the Gunners shrink to 13/2 to be crowned Premier League champions.

Although he’s more used to playing in a wide-forward role Wenger’s already hinted he could be played down the centre.

Theo Walcott

Last seen in an Arsenal shirt reminding Tottenham fans of the scoreline as he was stretchered off the pitch way back in January, Walcott should be back playing by September.

The England international has long been touted for a role down the centre of Arsenal’s attack, and this could be his year – injuries permiting.

Lukas Podolski

Podolski was left out of the team for too long last season according to the German, who reminded the gaffer of his scoring abilities when reinstated during the last few months.

His lack of pace out wide and thunderous shot makes the left-footer a prime contestant to be converted into an out-and-out striker.
