USA v Germany: Draw the result to be on in Recife

Published:

Everything is still up for grabs in Group G going into the final set of matches but there is no getting away from the fact both USA and Germany are in the driving seat.

The two sides face off at the Itaipava Arena knowing a point each will see both teams qualify for the knockout phase, drawing comparison with the famous game in 1982 between West Germany and Austria.

That day West Germany and Austria both had a chance to advance from the group but the Germans had to win by 2 goals or less. A draw or a West Germany win by 3 or more goals would have meant Austria exiting the tournament with Algeria heading through.

A 1-0 win for West Germany followed and as they say the rest is history! The “Pact of Gijón” was born.

Germany are overwhelming favourites at 8/13 for victory with the USA 8/1 for a shock win, while the “cough, cough” draw is available at 2/1.

Here are Oliver Yew’s best bets:

USA and Germany to draw @ 2/1

Lovers of a good football conspiracy take note! With both sides needing just a point to progress surely Team USA and Germany will just play out a tame draw?

Jürgen Kilnsmann and Joachim Löw have every intention of winning the game and sealing qualification in style and it’s not like the Germans have a past history in this sort of thing! Oh wait – Algeria know all about this sort of thing after the “Disgrace of Gijón”. Draw it is then…

USA v Germany to finish 0-0 @ 6/1 or 1-1 @ 5/1

Following on the draw theme it could be worth having a dabble in the correct score market for this one and, as explained above, with both sides only needing a point the draw looks the best way to go. Why not hedge your bets slightly by backing both the 0-0 and 1-1 correct score draws at 6/1 and 5/1 respectively.

Clint Dempsey to score at anytime @ 10/3

With Jozy Altidore still unavailable through injury, Team USA’s goal scoring burden will fall once again on Clint Dempsey.

But the former Fulham man has coped well so far with strikes against both Ghana and Portugal in Brazil and although a tight affair is expected in Recife if anyone is going to get the American fans celebrating it will be the USA captain.
