Tottenham out to hijack Liverpool bid for Sevilla full-back
Published:Liverpool’s plans to recruit Spanish youngster Alberto Moreno have suffered something of a setback after Tottenham entered the race to sign the Sevilla defender.
The Lilywhites are hoping to lure the 21-year-old to White Hart Lane as part of a deal that would see his current Andalusian employers receive £14m as well as Roberto Soldado on a season-long loan.
Soldado was not included in Spain’s squad for the World Cup in Brazil and is reportedly open to the idea of leaving London, having failed to hit the kind of form he enjoyed with Valencia during his debut season in the Premier League.
As part of the rumoured offer, Sevilla would then have the option to sign Soldado on a permanent deal, with Spurs eager to offload the 29-year-old forward and recoup some of the £26 million they paid for the Real Madrid academy graduate last summer.
Tottenham still face an uphill task to win the battle to land Moreno though, with Liverpool able to offer the left-back Champions League football as well as realistic ambitions for the Premier League title.
Should Sevilla accept Spurs’ bid, it could therefore come down to personal terms, where Tottenham would most likely aim to gazump any wage offer put forward by Liverpool.
Moreno could also favour a move to White Hart Lane and the opportunity to link up with Mauricio Pochettino – a manager whose reputation is founded on an impressive spell in charge of La Liga side Espanyol.
Liverpool, meanwhile, are gearing up for a busy summer in the transfer market with Rickie Lambert already joining from Southampton for £4m with former teammate Adam Lallana potentially following.
The Reds are also being linked with moves for a number of exciting young prospects from the continent, including Bayer Leverkusen’s Emre Can and Bayern Munich midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri.
