The storylines to watch out for at this year’s Wimbledon

Pop the Champagne corks, scoop some cream onto the strawberries and relocate your tennis racquets because Wimbledon is back.

Every major tennis tournament throws up questions to answer, and as this one gets underway in the sunshine it’ll be no different.

Here’s the undercurrents we’re keenest to find out answers to from the men’s and women’s section:

Will a tough draw stir Serena out of her slumber?

As has become the norm in the women’s section of Grand Slam tournaments, Serena Williams heads the pack in the outright betting market at 6/4.

However, her recent form suggests she perhaps doesn’t deserve such a large favourites tag.

Williams must make lemonade out of a Wimbledon draw full of lemons this year, with recent conqueror Alize Cornet and all of this year’s French Open last four in her quarter.

She may not get to have a crack at that quartet though as Cornet, who beat the American in Dubai in March, can end her participation in the third round.

The 32-year-old’s last six Grand Slam losses have come to players outside the top 10 (Cornet is 25) and you can back a Williams third-round exit at 14/1.

Is Rafael Nadal heading for another early exit?

Either side of his absence in 2009, the king of the French Open became quite at home in the Wimbledon final having reached that part of the tournament in five consecutive appearances, winning twice.

Since his 2011 procession though the Spaniard has been knocked out before the third round on two straight occasions.

Vulnerable on the fresher grass as he adjusts from the clay, Nadal didn’t have much prep time in the lead up to Wimbledon as he was dumped out in Halle’s first round by Dustin Brown.

Nadal is 11/2 to lose his opening round match at SW19 and 7/1 to exit in the second.
