Spurs rival Man United in chase for Dutch international full-back
Tottenham are keeping close tabs on Holland international full-back Daryl Janmaat as they look set to rival Manchester United for the player’s signature.
New Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino wants the 24-year-old, who is set to feature for the Dutch in their World Cup opener against Spain, to rival Kyle Walker for the right-back spot at White Hart Hart Lane.
The north London club are looking to steal a march on their rivals with a bid but Feyenorrd are holding out for reported £6m fee for Janmaat, who also attracting the attention of Serie A clubs Juventus and Napoli.
Tottenham appear at the head of the queue for his services after making initial contact with the Dutch club but incoming United boss and Janmaat’s current international manager is not willing to let the former Herenveen star go to Spurs without a fight.
One of the first tasks in Van Gaal’s in-tray is to freshen up an ageing United defence and Janmaat’s attacking abilities from right-back would be a vital addition to a squad which finished seventh in last season’s Premier League.
The Dutch boss is said to rate the Holland international – who has 16 caps for his country – very highly and some solid performances in Brazil could tempt Van Gaal to take the player with him to Old Trafford as he attempts to revitalise the Red Devils’ squad.
But in the forefront of Janmaat’s mind is not a potential move to England but the World Cup as Van Gaal’s team get set to face the reigning champions in Salvador.
The full-back will be a key player for Holland, who are 4/1 outsiders for victory, as they try to exact revenge on Spain in a repeat of the 2010 World Cup final.
Vincente del Bosque’s side are the 5/6 favourites with Ladbrokes to get the defence of their crown off to a winning start with the draw on at 23/10.
