Can Ronaldo’s Portugal blast inspire Selecao to second round?

Published:

Portugal face a mammoth task in order to reach the last-16 of the World Cup but some strong words from talisman and captain Cristiano Ronaldo could well inspire them in their quest to upset the odds.

Recent quotes attributed to CR7 have slated his teammates.

The Real Madrid star has reportedly claimed his national side had “limitations” and that “qualifying for the finals was problematic.

In terms of Portugal’s recent World Cup record at least, Ronaldo may well have a point.

The Selecao have won just one of their previous nine games at the finals, drawing four and losing the other four in that sequence.

However, now is the time for Paulo Bento’s side to finally deliver, starting tonight against Ghana in their final Group G game.

Ladbrokes have made Portugal the 23/20 favourites to beat the Black Stars with the draw 11/4 and a victory for the Ghanaians available at 11/5.

But it’s the bookmaker’s 9/1 about Portugal to qualify for the knockout phase that offers standout value.

It’s a huge ask – Portugal need Germany to beat the USA and overturn a five-goal difference.

However, Ronaldo’s blast and their recent form against African sides offer some hope and inspiration.

Portugal smashed Cameroon 5-1 prior to their World Cup campaign and are unbeaten against African teams in 11 previous encounters.

And should Ronaldo and co finally spark into life then a miraculous escape from Group G could be in store.

Portugal’s star man has netted 49 goals in 113 internationals and a return to such scintillating form in front of goal will be key if his side are to upset the odds.

And given the fact that Ghana are without a clean sheet in their last six World Cup games there should be ample opportunity for the Ballon D’or winner to shine.
